Modeling modern methane emissions from wetlands 1980-present

چکیده
Methane is one of the important greenhouse gases and plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry. Its contribution to the current greenhouse effect is about 22%. Since the beginning of the industrialization the atmospheric methane concentration has increased by a factor of 2.5. This increase continues until present, however, since the early 1990s the growth rate has decreased. Superimposed on this trend is considerable interannual variation. Currently natural wetlands are the largest methane source, however, current estimates of the wetland source strength are still uncertain, ranging from about 145 Tg yr [Houweling et al., 1999, and references therein] to 230 Tg yr [Hein et al., 1997]. In addition, they are believed to contribute considerably to interannual variations and particular anomalies. Wetland emissions depend highly on the climate, i.e., on soil temperature and water table. In this study, the history of global wetland emissions from 1980present has been simulated using a process-based methane-hydrology model that derives methane emissions from natural wetlands as a function of soil temperature, water table, and Net Primary Productivity. ECMWF and NCEP re-analyses were used as model forcing.

Methane emissions from western Siberian wetlands: heterogeneity and sensitivity to climate change
The prediction of methane emissions from high-latitude wetlands is important given concerns about their sensitivity to a warming climate. As a basis for the prediction of wetland methane emissions at regional scales, we coupled the variable infiltration capacity macroscale hydrological model (VIC) with the biosphere–energy-transfer–hydrology terrestrial ecosystem model (BETHY) and a wetland met...

متن کاملWarmer temperature accelerates methane emissions from the Zoige wetland on the Tibetan Plateau without changing methanogenic community composition
Zoige wetland, locating on the Tibet Plateau, accounts for 6.2% of organic carbon storage in China. However, the fate of the organic carbon storage in the Zoige wetland remains poorly understood despite the Tibetan Plateau is very sensitive to global climate change. As methane is an important greenhouse gas and methanogenesis is the terminal step in the decomposition of organic matter, understa...
متن کاملMethane emissions from wetlands: biogeochemical, microbial, and modeling perspectives from local to global scales.
Understanding the dynamics of methane (CH4 ) emissions is of paramount importance because CH4 has 25 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and is currently the second most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas. Wetlands are the single largest natural CH4 source with median emissions from published studies of 164 Tg yr(-1) , which is about a third of total global emissions...
متن کاملInfluence of Different Plant Species on Methane Emissions from Soil in a Restored Swiss Wetland
Plants are a major factor influencing methane emissions from wetlands, along with environmental parameters such as water table, temperature, pH, nutrients and soil carbon substrate. We conducted a field experiment to study how different plant species influence methane emissions from a wetland in Switzerland. The top 0.5 m of soil at this site had been removed five years earlier, leaving a subst...
